10 Signs Your Training Environment Sucks!

Let’s say that you had a friend that lived in another state and was considering changing schools based on what’s happening at his current school. Would you have a clear perspective on what a good training environment is supposed to be to help him make the right decision?

Each week, I receive emails from two types of grapplers; grapplers that love the places where they train and grapplers that hate it but refuse to leave for various reasons.

That led me to a burning question: are their warning signs for a bad training environment and what are they? And after careful thought, I created The Wise Grappler’s “10 Signs Your Training Environment Sucks” Checklist.

Get Things Done! The Power Of A To-do List

One day my client and I were discussing her job. She gets to work early every day, works through lunch and finally goes home after everyone else. Yet, despite all the hours she was putting in she didn’t feel like she was accomplishing anything. She felt unproductive, ineffective and without direction.

The first thing I asked her was what she expected to get done each day. She didn’t know. I asked her if she used a to-do or task list. She told me that she creates them all the time. Her current list was over 2-pages long. Then she confessed that she hadn’t looked at her to-do list in over a week.

Successful Internet Article Marketing Means Fishing In The Right Pond

Internet article marketing and fishing share a lot of the same characteristics. One of the most important ones is know where to market or fish.

The categories or topics within the Internet article marketing strategy are too many to enumerate in this article. However some of my favorites are:

  • Sales in Business
  • Ethics for Business
  • Customer Service
  • Productivity
  • Strategic Planning
  • Real Estate Selling
  • Top 7 or Top 10 Tips
  • Positive Attitudes
  • Coaching
  • Inspirational
  • Leadership
  • Motivation
  • Goal Setting
  • Time Management
  • Self Esteem
  • Success

Each of these topics or categories is its own little to big pond. Within each of these ponds are literally millions of fish that may or may not see your bait because of all the other bait in the same pond.

Napoleonic Goal Setting

The chapter on desire in “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill contains a formula for what he calls “transforming desire into money,” however, this method really could be used to transform desire into pretty much anything you pick. In his own words, here are the six steps:

First. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say “I want plenty of money.” Be definite as to the amount.

Second. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.”)

Celebration, Regret, And Remorse

Recently, three events occurred that forced me to experience celebration, regret, and remorse. And as I thought about each one of them, I was able to draw a lesson from each one of them.

Celebration - My teammate, good friend and role model, Mike Fowler, gave an outstanding performance at the ADCC 2007. Mike was able to win two matches against two BJJ legends (Renzo Gracie and Saulo Riberio). This was an amazing accomplishment and I was very happy for and proud of Mike. The lesson here is Mike proves what hard work, commitment to a system, getting a coach, and actually listening to him (unlike me for many years) will do for you. Congrats Mike on an excellent performance and keep up the good work!

Goal Setting And Your Own Peace Of Mind

Goal setting turns some people right off! Even people who are serious about personal development and goal setting sometimes voice similar concerns. Why is that? Perhaps the goal is too ambitious for the abilities of the person concerned. And so they begin to stress and worry about never achieving it. That’s a clue to what I believe is the root cause behind the avoidance of setting goals, or of dropping them. Your own peace of mind.
